Better late than never! In May 2023, I spent a month in Kiel, Germany, shadowing my collaborator Duygu Dengiz in the “Inorganic Functional Materials” group under Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Quandt. Their work on thin-film smart materials, micro-actuators, and self-deployable implants—using cost-effective, scalable processes—offered fascinating insights into cutting-edge medical device fabrication.

I want to thank Prof. Martin Bechthold (MaPS Group at Harvard), Prof. Ali Malkawi (Harvard CGBC), and Prof. Quandt for supporting this visit, as well as Duygu and the entire team for their hospitality. Observing shape memory alloy manufacturing in a state-of-the-art cleanroom was eye-opening, and I’m excited to continue developing Kiriform as a potential stent for brain aneurysms.
